Quran & Science

The holy Quran is the word of God. The Almighty revealed it to his final prophet and in turn to humanity. When prophets were inviting their people to the truth, God endowed them with miracles to convince their people. Moses was given a miracle that excelled magic and dazzled magicians in ancient Egypt. Jesus was given a miracle that excelled medicine as he could cure people from incurable diseases. The only people who could see these miracles are the ones who were there. As Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the final prophet his miracle had to be continuous and immortal, this immortal miracle is the holy Quran itself. Here are some verses of the Quran that proof that The Quran is the word of ALLAH (GOD), as only ALLAH would have known at the time of revelation more than 1400 years ago, what scientist have discovered in recent times.

Splitting Asunder of the Earth and the Skies

The issue how the universe came into being has always been one of the issues that scientists wondered about and discussed most. Many theories were put forward regarding the issue throughout history; each theory was refuted in the course of time as science advanced and they were labeled as wrong. The theory that is agreed on and is widely accepted today is the Big Bang Theory. The Big Bang is a cosmological model claiming that the universe came into being 13,7 billion years ago from an excessively intense and hot point. It was first put forward in 1920’s by Russian cosmologist and mathematician Alexander Friedmann and Belgian physicist Georges Lemaitre. This theory, which assumes that the universe had a beginning, was widely accepted by scientists especially by physicists because it is supported by various evidences. According to the Big Bang model, the universe was in a very intense and hot state in its first phase before it expanded. That is, the universe was all in one piece. Then, it was separated into pieces to take its current shape with a big explosion called the Big Bang. This knowledge, which scientists were able to obtain only in the 19th century, was informed by the Quran 1400 years ago.

The following is stated in verse 30 of the chapter of al-Anbiya: “Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of Creation), before We clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?” The word translated as “joined together” in the verse is the Arabic word “ratq”. It means fused, coherent, inseparable. That is, this word is used in order to describe two substances that form a whole in Arabic. The verb “fatq” used in the verse means to separate. In Arabic, this verb is used in the sense of splitting something that is adjacent and coming out by breaking something. For instance, this verb is used when a seed sprouts and comes out of the ground in Arabic. Now, let us go back to the verse: In the verse, a situation in which two things are joined together (ratq) is mentioned. Then, they are separated (fatq). That is, one of them comes out by tearing the other one. When we think of the first moment of the Big Bang, we see that the whole matter of the universe was together in one substance. In other words, everything, even the skies and the earth that had not been created yet, was in the same substance, interbedded (ratq) and inseparable. That is, they were joined together as it is stated in the verse. Then, this substance broke into pieces through a big explosion. That is, the deed that the Quran defines “as fatq” took place. The Quran informs us about the Big Bang Theory, which was discovered in the last century, more than 1.400 years ago.

Anyone who thinks impartially and justly will accept this: A human being who could not read and write cannot have been found this fact 1.400 years ago. Can a human being have discovered a fact on his own 1.400 years ago that scientists discovered only 100 years ago? Since it is impossible, there is only one alternative left: The book that mentions this fact is the book of Allah, who collected the whole realms in one substance and who created the earth, the sky and everything in them through a big bang after that. Yes, the Quran is the pre-eternal book of that Being. We believe in it.

And it is He Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy (rain), till when they have carried a heavy-laden cloud, We drive it to a land that is dead, then We cause water (rain) to descend thereon. Then we produce every kind of fruit therewith. Similarly, we shall raise up the dead, so that you may remember or take heed.” Quran (7:57) Modern science has confirmed the scientific points mentioned in this verse of the Quran. The winds carry water particles which are rich in salt up into the atmosphere; these particles which are called ‘aerosols’ function as water traps and form cloud drops by collecting around the water vapour themselves. The clouds are formed from water vapour that condenses around the salt crystals or dust particles in the air. As the water droplets in these clouds are very small, the clouds are suspended in the air, and spread across the sky, thus, the sky is covered in clouds. The water particles that surround salt crystals and dust particles thicken and form raindrops, so drops that become heavier than the air leave the clouds and start to fall to the ground as rain.

Moon

“And [I swear by] the moon when it is full, you will mount up stage by stage! What is the matter with them, that they have no faith” (Qur’an, 84:18-20)

Indeed, the astronauts’ spacecraft pass through each layer of the atmosphere one by one, and then begin to pass through the Moon’s gravitational field. Thus, the Moon is reached by moving through individual layers. In addition, the swearing by the Moon by ALLAH, further strengthens this emphasis, meaning that the verse may well be a sign that humanity will travel to the Moon. These are just some of the many hundreds of verses in the Quran which are simply inspirational and divine. In order to appreciate the scientific miracles contained in the Qur’an, we must understand the level of scientific knowledge which existed at the time when this holy book was revealed. When one understands the context in which the Qur’an was revealed, one can understand more clearly how extraordinary the book of Islam actually is.

Sea

“He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together: Between them is a Barrier which they do not transgress.” [Al-Qur’an Rahman 55:19-20]

In the Arabic text the word ‘barzakh’ means a barrier or a partition. This barrier, however, is not a physical partition. The Arabic word ‘maraja’ literally means ‘they both meet and mix with each other’. Early commentators of the Qur’an were unable to explain the two opposite meanings for the two bodies of water, i.e. they meet and mix, and at the same time there is a barrier between them. Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity and density.1 Oceanologists are now in a better position to explain this verse. There is a slanted unseen water barrier between the two seas through which water from one sea passes to the other. But when the water from one sea enters the other sea, it loses its distinctive characteristic and becomes homogenized with the other water. In a way this barrier serves as a transitional homogenizing area for the two waters. This phenomenon is also mentioned in the following verse of the Qur’an:

“And made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water?” [Al-Qur’an Naml 27:61]

This phenomenon occurs in several places, including the divider between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean at Gibralter. A white bar can also be clearly seen at Cape Point, Cape Peninsula, South Africa where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean. But when the Qur’an speaks about the divider between fresh and salt water, it mentions the existence of “a forbidding partition” with the barrier.

“It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: one palatable and sweet, and the other salty and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, to be passed. [Al-Qur’an Furkan 25:53]

Modern science has discovered that in estuaries, where fresh (sweet) and salt water meet, the situation is somewhat different from that found in places where two salt water seas meet. It has been discovered that what distinguishes fresh water from salt water in estuaries is a “pycnocline zone with a marked density discontinuity separating the two layers.” This partition (zone of separation) has a salinity different from both the fresh water and the salt water. This phenomenon occurs in several places, including Egypt, where the river Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea. These scientific phenomena mentioned in the Qur’an was also confirmed by Dr. William Hay, a well-known marine scientist and Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado, U.S.A.

THE IDENTITY IN THE FINGERPRINT

Fingerprint

Everyone, including identical twins, has a unique fingerprint. In other words, people’s identities are coded at their fingertips. This coding system may also be compared to the barcode system that is used today.

While it is stated in the Qur’an that it is easy for Allah to bring man back to life after death, peoples’ fingerprints are particularly emphasized:

“Yes, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.” (Qur’an, 75:4)

The emphasis on fingerprints has a very special meaning. This is because shapes and details on everyone’s fingerprint are unique to each individual. Every person who is alive or who has ever lived in this world has a set of unique fingerprints. Furthermore, even identical twins having the very same DNA sequence have their own set of fingerprints.105

Fingerprints attain their final shape before birth and remain the same for a lifetime unless a permanent scar appears. That is why fingerprints are accepted as a very important proof of identity, exclusive to their owner. The science of fingerprints has been used as a non-erring identity determination method.

However, what is important is that this feature of fingerprints was only discovered in the late 19th century. Before then, people regarded fingerprints as ordinary curves without any specific importance or meaning. However in the Qur’an, Allah points to the fingertips, which did not attract anyone’s attention at that time, and calls our attention to their importance. This importance has only been fully understood in our day.
